Sophie Hartges is a Calgary-based multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores perception, pattern recognition, and the imaginative potential of ambiguity. Working primarily in drawing and painting, she creates symmetrical compositions inspired by pareidolia: the human tendency to perceive meaningful images in abstract forms. Through an intuitive process of inkblots, mirrored imagery, and layered mark-making, her work invites viewers to discover their own interpretations, transforming acts of looking into acts of play. This process celebrates the deeply personal ways we interpret the unknown, revealing how imagination can transform ambiguity into connection.

Hartges graduated from the Alberta University of the Arts in 2024 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing. Alongside her studio practice, she guides paint events, fostering creativity and curiosity while encouraging viewers to slow down, embrace ambiguity, and find personal meaning within the unexpected.
